The metaverse has been busy with a lot of exciting new things lately, including issues from elsewhere, such as Meta (formerly Facebook) having trouble with their efforts in the virtual realm and other corporate giants wanting get a piece of the metaverse action, but don’t know how.

One such entity is the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which aims to use new technologies to expand the reach of education to students around the world.

Recently a new free online educational tool was launched in the metaverse by the Ozone Secretariat, a UNEP office that handles issues and concerns related to agreements and treaties on the ozone layer. This tool comes in the form of a new simulation game that uses in-game avatars that players can use.

The new game titled “Apollo’s Edition” is a new addition to the main game platform launched by UNEP called “Reset Earth”. This platform hosts various training metaverse games that teach players aged 13 to 18 about environmental education, mainly about the dangers of not protecting the planet’s ozone layer, its consequences and how to help its recovery.

The game introduces Apollo, a new character for this game who guides and educates players to learn more about the ozone layer which protects the inhabitants of the Earth. Apollo’s movements, expressions and emotions were produced using motion-capture technology (in which a real-life actor is recorded doing all of this), according to Mirage News.

Players are then tasked with making important in-game decisions, each of which has a significant impact on game progress. Players are given the option to select four choices, in which the game visualizes the outcome produced from that chosen option.

Metaverse for education and being accessible to many

Apart from games, the metaverse is also used for educational purposes, like UNEP’s Reset Earth. According to Borders.

Users such as students can access the metaverse as long as they have the appropriate device, such as their smartphone or computer. Then, using other smart gadgets such as VR/AR headsets alongside hand, body and foot sensors, can deliver an immersive experience to the user, boosting their presence inside the metaverse. as if the player was physically inside it.

Also, many users would be less bothered by time and location thanks to the metaverse being primarily online. As long as they have access to 4G/5G connections or a regular internet connection, they can enter the metaverse without any obstacles.
